The Great Outdoors.............???

Anybody else catch this new series on BBC 4 last night?

Am I alone in thinking it was a teensy weensy bit naff?

I am sorry to say i watched it too. It wasn't a teensy weensy bit naff it was much worse than that.
Where have all the good script writers gone.

Let's not beat about the bush - it was dreadful!
Script and main characters lacked any 'ooomph' - and the story line was weak and flat.
When I said 'teensy weensy' I was trying to be kind!

I thought it was deeply disturbing (as well as being naff) and one of the main characters is also in the IT Crowd, which for most episodes is also a missed opportunity. Both seem to be written by people who have a superficial knowldege of these 'activities' but not sufficient insight to poke some real fun at them. Maybe the characters will develop some more in the remaining two episodes. Or perhaps they should try turning it off and back on again.

I bet we could put a better script together. I know i can come up with a few sketches that would make better watching. God knows i have been in some situations over the years.
Just thinking about them now makes me laugh.

Apart from what I said before (naffness, flatness, etc) it also upset me as it reinforced the stereo-typical 'ramblers' as being inadequate human beings in various different ways.
I'm not sure calling it 'The Great Outdoors' was a welcome move either.....

Anyone who does anything different from the usual activities of the average stereotypical person is going to be poked fun at, usually by those who are about 20% qualified to do so. I saw the programme and the material in episode 1 was sometimes cringeworthy and going down the road of, for example the old programme The Brittas empire, which seems to deteriorate and run out of steam rather quickly.
